As a civilian, the President is not required to salute. Reagan started the custom, but it's really not appropriate military protocol.

Agreed. But again, it's semantics being used to showcase President Obama as somehow being anti-American and not supporting our troops.

A brother member of the Army Security Agency sent this information to me. Though the information may appear as only a matter-of-fact announcement to some, it represents something much more deep and of an emotional significance known only to those who were willing to be placed in harm's way by serving in defense of The United States of America. What I've noticed in many pictures of the President is that the clasped hands in front is a standard pose for him. When the protocol is ambiguous, this is probably what he does naturally.
