Lexica says: Clipped partly because the presenter's accent in English is quite entertaining to listen to, and partly because I've been wanting to get my French a little less rusty. Thanks for the web-site, an interesting one to save and make use of, though I don't get what's 'entertaining' about the presenter's accent. He sounds like what one would expect a Scot to sound like. Nothing peculiar. Am I missing something? It's the part right at the beginning, really, when he first switches from speaking French to speaking English. It takes a moment or two for his accent to shift to what it naturally is, and there's a bit there where he's speaking with a French accent on top of a Scottish accent. Since I'm listening with a Californian's ear, it's interesting and amusing to me. I'm sure I'd sound at least as odd to a Scot listening to me speak French – with my accent, they'd keep expecting me to say something like "Comment ça va, dude?" You're right; there is a momentary waver there, as if in some way he's switching identities. I must admit I missed that completely first time round. Thanks for pointing it out. It's somewhat like the stories you hear about a man in the English Midlands, who woke up after surgery with an Irish accent, though he hadn't been raised in Ireland; it wore off in few days, I believe. |
