A great book about the subject is Where Wizards Stay Up Late - The Origins Of The Internet. It really tells the technical details about how things started. Very interesting and not a dusty dry tale.

I really do not think so, kwonsu. I believe they had some idea of understanding what it meant to their individual and collective enterprises, but I don't think anyone really understood the enormous impact connectivity and information access would have on humanity as we have witnessed it.
