In 1990 the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) came into play so that Americans with disabilities could still work and participate in activities the average person could do. But how much did this really help people with disabilities? In Holland we have a system where the government pays for supplement in income to people that earn less because they got disabled/ chronically ill. Modifications of the workplace are also (partly) paid for through our taxsystem. So it appears there's no reason why disabled people would not be able to find a job that suits their abilities. However, the system is quite complex and filling in the papers and waiting for a reply is very timedemanding, so even with all these safety nets, people are still not able to find a (good) job when they're 'disabled'. |
