Cornelius said that when his baggy pants slipped, he pulled out his gun from a pants pocket, then hit his arm against the side of the car, causing the gun to fire. The sound startled him, he said, resulting in the second shot.

Would not get diminished responsibility with an excuse like that? He just could not be the full shilling.
