The second amendment was also put in place to protect the people from a tyrannical government of their own making should the the Republic ever be compromised.

The American people are the largest standing army on the planet the US government needs to consider this as it makes further advances towards tyranny and injustice.

I keep saying, I'm going to have to get a better gun, my little .38 snub nose special means I'd have to be too close to a bad guy to do him any damage. I've been putting it off, but more and more I'm getting closer to getting a gun with better knock down power.

One only has to look at Honduras' violent repression of its citizens on the streets to realize why the 2nd Amendment exists.
