Cory doctorow has a great short story about harnessing the swarming intelligence of things like ants to reroute everything from electricity to data to traffic. Our views can be very homocentric at times, and some of the discoveries in nature do not have definitions, as we are discovering properties of a phenomena, without fully understanding their contribution to the whole. This understanding will come through continued study of the connection of individuals in a species or group to each other, to other species, and environmental conditions. Meanwhile theory and metaphors, can help us create a picture to which we can attach findings.
