Rasmus says:
Religious conflict rages on, despite claims we live in a "secular age" -- two authors explore the clash of beliefs.

This article reviews:

Divided by Faith: Religious Conflict and the Practice of Toleration in Early Modern Europe by Benjamin J. Kaplan

God's Crucible: Islam and the Making of Europe, 570-1215 by David Levering Lewis

On one side of the debate are the hards, those militant atheists who argue that the problem is not so much religious discord as religion itself, an idea that has given rise to repeated horrors not because it is misapplied or misunderstood but because it is false and therefore a poor guide to reality.
Damn, is that right!

I have as hard a time saying God doesn't exist, as I have in saying hope doesn't exist, or that love doesn't exist. You can't *prove* any of things like that. These things belong to a diferent "realm", sort of.

You can't measure them, weigh them or scientifically quantify or reproduce any of them in a lab. Yet some still claim to love and that love indeed does exist! Are they wrong? Delusional? Ignorant? Deceived? Illogical? Lying to themselves? Some people could probably argue that. But those affected see and feel the effects of love all the time, though you can never take that love, grab a handful of it, hold it out and say "Here! See! Here's a pound of love! Proof!"

Some people...

Love can be divisive. Love has started wars. Love has caused people to hate and kill and feel envy or jealousy. Love of money, love of nation, love of power, love of oneself. It's very destructive and society has no use for it in today's day and age. All the books and poems and songs on love are fiction too!! I say we outlaw it and ridicule ALL the people who are dumb enough to STILL believe in it.

Ah, yes. Love and hope. Those are feelings. We all have them, atheists and pious alike. And they surely exist, internally.

They exist in the subjective world of the experiencer, but not in the objective world of actuality. We can feel love, and empathy, and desire, and all the things that affect us all. We can feel pain and anguish. Does that verify the existence of a devil?

A person can be head over heels in love with you, from afar, and you'll never know it unless it is somehow translated into an objective... an action in the real objective world.

You'll never know because the experience is subjective, existing only in the experiencer.

The experience is "real" to that person alone. Th...

Enjoyed the article. To expand god into the "everything" is to, well... as Ron Barrier puts it:

"If such a creature existed, belief would be rendered unnecessary, and the entire system of organized religion would collapse."

I think the author of the article is witnessing the slow decay of religion, as more people become educated and leave the religion of their parents for something more relevant than the dogma of old.

God is evolving.

@Aces. My comment was an intentional and obviously naive analogy and not meant for literal dissection. *sigh* Again, you miss the point. I had hoped you would have seen the forrest in my comment, but you can't ever seem to get passed the trees. No worries. We're simply not on the same page. You can continue argueing trees and I will just continue to contemplate forrests.

Peace

Perhaps you're right. I didn't understand the forest part, as an analogy. When you connected god with love and hope as analogies, I thought I understood.

These are objectively immeasurable, as I thought you were saying about god.

I admit, if that's not what you were getting at, then I am still missing the meaning of your analogy.

I am sorry.

Ein Gedicht, insbesondere für AcesLucky.
EIN KOLIBRI KAM UNVERWANDELT
in die Gattung der Träume hinein,
sah sich um, sah die dort vorhandenen
Menschen, malte seine Flügel blau und sagte
zu den Zweibeinigen: ich bin der Himmel.
Die Farbe sprach dafür.
Aber die Leute hatten keine Beweise.
Also schwiegen sie feige um die Schönheit
herum, gaben vor, Diplomatie zu betreiben.
Sie rechneten, betrieben Kalkulation
und teilten am Ende dem Kolibri mit,
man habe beschlossen, Farbe,
das sei Illusion. Der Vogel staunte,
er lernte das Staunen unvermittelt
von den Menschen, flog zu den lila Blüten,
setzte sich hin und packte sein Zauberbuch aus.
Dann blätterte er einige Mal hin und her,
verwandelte ...
