merrie says: He vows to take away congressional health insurance, but presidents can't do that. John Edwards' new ad says that when he's in the Oval Office, he'll tell Congress to act within six months to make sure all Americans have health insurance or "I'm going to use my power as president to take your health care away from you." If Bush can eliminate habeas-corpus, a cornerstone since the signing of the Magna-Carta, I'm confident that Edwards could do something about congressional health care. ahh bartendingbear! I am so awe struck by your remarks. Maybe Edwards can eliminate health benefits for enemy combatants but he hasn't seen a fight like the one he would have on his hands if he tries that with congress @topsailangler LOL you got that right ! Anyone with a brain cell should at least suspect that the president can not repeal health benefit laws for government employees! It's all about political theatre ! Which, of course, shows how plainly the disabled vets are mere marionettes on the stage, not noble heroes defending our shores, given the cutbacks BushCo has wrought upon their health care and well being. A shameful suicide rate, divorces through the roof, and huge numbers of homeless vets stand as pitiful testament to that fact. You want political theater? I would imagine that if that's all it is, any president could quite effectively rally the populace behind the greater public good if he were willing to fall on his sword and forgo a second term by speaking plainly and loudly to the disenfranchisement all US citizens have suffered in the name of the corporate greed BushCo has championed so shamelesly. Veterans Affairs VA Medical Research FY 2008 Funding On September 6, 2007, the Senate passed the "Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act, 2008." The measure includes $500 million for VA Medical and Prosthetic Research, an $86.3 million (21 percent) increase over the FY 2007 joint funding resolution. On June 15, 2007, the House approved its version of the bill with $480 million for VA research, an increase of $66.3 million (16 percent) over the FY 2007 joint funding resolution. More >> VA Medical Care FY 2008 Funding The Senate bill provides $36.6 billion for VA medical care, a $4.5 billion (14 percent) increase over the FY 2007 joint funding resolution. The House vers... Lock 'em up. They won't need health benefits then. And probably no one will miss them. Funny, I was under the assumption our military has consistantly gone to hell under liberal leadership, and only to be rejuvenated under conservative leadership. Yeah like Bush really rjuvenated the military by stretchin them so thin as to break' em and lying to get them there and then NOT preparing for the consequences as witnessed by the high suicide rates and homelessness among vets...Great job, Mr. Compassionate Conservative! That said I would reduce the military by half and re-prioritize any military action (NO pre-emptive wars) and create a Dept. of Peace to completely change the USA foreign policy and dismantle the military industrial complex...A huge job but it could be done! Funny how libs keep insisting the Bush administration has cut veteran benefits when the fact is he increased them more during his first term than Clinton did during his entire presidency. But if you want to see a cut, check out HR 760 that the democrats are trying to push through. It gives veteran benefits to Filipinos who served in WWII and their survivors. And they do that by cutting benefits to disabled American veterans. As for the suicide rates, that is BS as well. The Army has a lower suicide rate than their civilian counterparts (same age, sex, and race demographics). And there have been studies showing that veterans of Vietnam and the first Gulf war both had suicide rates comparabl... Congressional health care is funded by the Legislative Branch Appropriations act. And yes, the President can veto that. Well, he could veto every bill that came to him which renewed or reformed benefits for federal employees... Or some such game... [That said I would reduce the military by half and re-prioritize any military action (NO pre-emptive wars) and create a Dept. of Peace to completely change the USA foreign policy and dismantle the military industrial complex...A huge job but it could be done!] You simply do not believe in war, as your statement clearly states. Guess you feel by crippling our military we would be safer in the long run, hopefully the majority will never agree with you. |
