citizenbfk says: Republican Joe might lose his right to vote due to another tactic of Republican voter suppression. Why? Because he name is misspelled. Misspelled by an election official when he registered. Misspelled by one letter. As this clip says: "disenfranchisement by typo." This happen to Jose Lopez-Sandin. The election official typed in his name as 'Joseph." This happen to Anne Nguyen. The election official typed her name as: "Ann." You would think such a thing would be no problem. No. You would think it could be corrected, right now, a few weeks before the elections; or even right there at the voting place. No. So, at least, such a voter could fill out a 'provisional ballot' and that solves the problem. No. Provisional ballots get rejected at an extremely high rate. You think stupid things like this (also, like having your home address with a typo), you would think the law would be changed. No. Republicans like this type of voter suppression that mainl Where I vote we need a photo ID which would have the correct spelling and a photo. Address is not a problem. The address listed on a voter's ID does not have to match that listed on the precinct register. There is no disenfranchisement by typo. The voter signs the precinct register and the signature is compared to the signature on the photo ID. They must be voting in the right precinct if they have changed address their name would be on the register of that precinct. They may go there to vote. @GG3604 That sounds good and the same here in Arizona for the things you mention. Arizona, though, is also the only state in the nation that requires proof of citizenship. There are also court rulings that challenge residency if there is "no intent to remain indefinitely." (See: http://www.brennancenter.org/studentvoting/states/arizona ) These extra and somewhat unique rules in Arizona are due to the flood of illegal immigrants (or "undocumented aliens") that cross the border everyday. I have no big gripe personally. I like the ease of voting here -- for me. Folks can also early vote by mail, and register on the Internet. Our use of paper ballots with then optical scanners also seems ... Citizen I honestly think you should get out of Clipmarks and write a book on these ''election'' facts. If you do not get out of Clipmarks you will never commence writing anything else. @benaloy - Thanks for the good advise. I will be doing a 'gradual withdrawal,' from Clipmarks (and my one other issues/ideas forum) starting Nov. 5th. I made a personal commitment to support Obama -- and not let him or his ideas get trashed talked here or there. It's a good forum, though. Lots of fine people. But there were also others who struck me as obvious anti-Obama trolls and no way should they be able to dominate the threads, esp. with rudeness, insults and nothing but unfounded smear campaigns. This was not just a totally selfless endeavor. I found I learned things. Discovered cool things. I knew that developing and expressing one's ideas in a "robust," forum and debate is a lot ... |
