I don't know what you guys may think but I find myself in agreement with this 17 yr old. Personally i don't feel this way. I actually find the abrupt nature of text messaging to be pretty awkward. I always find myself wanting to talk (regardless of how quick) rather than text. I think i'm in the minority on this one. I know exactly what you're talking about and, like the author, I constantly wonder about what the world will be like if an entire generation of children -- more comfortable with texting and chatting than talking in person -- are unintentionally extending the socially awkward period of adolescence throughout the rest of their lives. (The otaku shall inherit the Earth. I think the touching, but slightly disturbing, film Me and You and Everyone We Know explored this uneasy social phenomenon rather well.... Thanks for the link to the story and the trailer, Kore7. Oh, I am soooooo a txt'er. lol I hate the telephone. I'm a phone support rep by trade, and I spend 8 hours talking to people daily. I find that my real life conversations have become stunted and to the point. When I'm done talking I want to be done. period. I don't like the uncomfortable silence when no one has anything to say anymore. And I don't like hanging on the line just because my friend called me and I feel obligated to sit there until they say goodbye or untill I've thought of some great excuse to move on. ---- on a contradictory note, I love people though!! I can spend all day with someone in an online video game, or sitting silently next to them in person, or playing board... |
