Today, throughout the world, peasants, workers, indigenous peoples, and students are galvanized into movements that are challenging state power rooted in global norms of neoliberalism. New movements have gained greater traction with the legitimacy and strength of a global collective behind them, rather than as isolated protests. The oppressed are framing new narratives of liberation to contest power on a state and international level: whether peasants in Latin America or India struggling for land reform; indigenous peoples mobilizing resistance for official recognition of their rights; or workers and students throughout the world waging unauthorized strikes and sit-ins, and taking to the streets in support of democracy and equality.

That's not completely right, Brightlight!
In the last 200 years was mostly more social unrest than now, but there were no sattelites to send it out in the whole world. And in the 19th century were nothing to send at all. But ther were revolutions worldwide, and until the late 70ies were workers organized and if you think about, you'll remember, that in the USA, Italy, France and UK no month without any strike passed!
If Bush had tried to introduce the patriots act, the people would have stoned him - but he hadn't tried.
Today the people is freightened and 90% let die their children instead to shout out and reclaim their rights.

I believe that we only hear about the social unrest they want us to hear about sometimes and that creates fear. You are right Bush would never have got away with the Patriot Law and many other abuses years ago. But they seem to have become a lot cleverer about controlling the masses and protests after Vietnam and Mad Maggie Thatcher stopped strikes in the UK, etc. People today seem to be scared to death or simply sheeple!!

The latter part of the 20th Century was the beginning of the Age of Thought Control. It made possible the abuses of the Soviet Union, the Iron Curtain, The Bamboo Curtain, Wars for Oil and the Patriot Act.

Unfortunately, we now have Obama making threats against the one medium not dominated by jackbooted corporate pirates; the Internet. People need to take action to prevent the commercialization of the Internet.

I agree bright, the powers that control corporate media don't report all the unrest around the world.

We rarely hear anything of what is going on in Burma (Myanmar), Zimbabwe, Bosnia Herzegovina, China’s Xinjiang region, or even the growing unrest here in the U.S.

The U.S. media might casually mention a one-liner about something in foreign countries but if it doesn’t involve some entertainment personality or other then we are not likely to hear about it.

This is why we must keep the internet a free and open forum in order to keep abreast of what is really happening in the world.

Thanks for the link Disenchanted, I can't sign the petition for a neutral internet in the US but I have put it on Facebook for all to see and pick up more signatures. That is what free Internet is all about after all!!
