But at least one coral expert said there was little chance of the organisms being altogether eliminated, adding that no coral species has yet to become extinct despite intense pressures from overfishing, pollution and climate change.

"Will reefs go extinct? No," said Bill Precht, who was not involved in the study but has studied corals in the Caribbean and Florida for 25 years. "Will reefs be greatly compromised? Certainly."
