With Firefox 2.0, just go to options. First thing you see under the main tab is startup. Right there you have the options of starting up with your home page, a blank page, or to show windows and tabs from last time. Check the show windows and tabs option and your Firefox session never ends. Through restarts, reboots, and shutdowns, you will always pick up right where you left off.

You can save all your tabs and their histories by installing the "Tab Mix Plus" extension and enabling "session manager" and "crash recovery." This extension has really been a life-saver as far as preserving all my tabs that I'm not yet ready to close.
