The story reminded me of the Ig-Nobel Prizes. They have given prizes to some freaky experiments.
They are real, and there is prize money, but that may be so it is easier for the winner to get a job doing something else. They are awarded in October.

Most of them are a surprise even when you know what they are. They usually end with the idea "Why any one want to do that in an experiment ?"..at least it's a weird kind of funny

What I did notice about them is that while they were crazy, they didn't work.
