First of all, the child abuse. I won't say more on that suject because that's clear for all of us. But then, knowing what judaism is about and being jewish myself, I can say this people couldn't have been "orthodox" because they were contradicting every single principle of judaism.

And the most important principle of judaism (right along with believing in God an only in Him, and of course the prohibition of idolatry) states that life is the most sacred thing and you cannot end your life or put yourself in danger no matter what... BUT if you are in a situation where you have to abuse someone (as in rape, torture, etc) in order to live... you have to choose to die. That's one of three exceptions, the other two involve the death of someone else and idolatry.

The point I'm trying to make is an answer to righthand's interrogant... "What religion sees it as creed to torture children beyond what would be acceptable to the worst criminal or terrorist?"

None. At least, judaism prohibits that one expressely, even if your life depends on it. The people that commited and permitted these atrocious acts are ignorant, twisted and ill (as in 'severe mental illness'), not orthodox.

I've two motives in high lightening these events in Israel. Firstly because these events are NEVER reported in the American press. No prize for working out how this happens. The second is related but different. Always any oddities within Islam is reported in detail in America.
