of Sandow Birk’s American Qur’an on view simultaneously at Koplin del Rio, 
Culver City and Catharine Clark, San Francisco. The shows’ subject matter, a 
translation of the Qur’an (Koran) illustrated with images of contemporary 
American life, is definitely sensitive in the current political environment with 
wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and tension between the United States and many 
other Islamic countries. Birk’s Qur’an doesn’t shy away from images like smoky 
World Trade Center Towers and American troops in desert combat, but the series 
as a whole is not an attack on Muslims. The artist focuses as much, if not more 
on the peaceful chapters (called sura) of the Qur’an and attempts to relate the 
teachings to contemporary American experiences. Ultimately the drawings come
