Buying bulk just doesn't make sense for items you don't use frequently, whether it's cereal or sunscreen, says Tawra Kellam, founder of Living on a Dime, a frugal-living site. You won't save money in the long run if you end up throwing out a barely-touched item because it's expired. In other words, if you don't frequently get heartburn or indigestion, that 116-pack of Alka Seltzer at Costco for $9.49 may not be as good a deal for you as the 36-pack for $5.29 at Drugstore.com. Both expire about a year after purchase.
