I find it interesting that these ancient figures (I'm writing about the ones with ages in five digits, not the Greco-Roman and other, more recent examples) are always termed "erotica". It puzzles me when I contemplate whether the notion of eroticism or pornography could have existed that long ago - porn, like many other sex-related hangups, seem to me to be the products of a post-subsistence civilization. Could these ancient figures merely have been some kind of paleolithic dolls? If they had any coverings, clothing of some kind, those would probably not have survived. Think of it this way: what do you suppose an alien or future
paleontologist would make of the over one billion Barbie doll...
