LOL, My mom keeps asking why I don't email her more. Sort of an upgrade from "you never cal" I have to admit that the fascination of texting does escape me. IM chatting? Not my thing. I guess I am old! I luv IM. I hate IM. The few times I tried it, all I did was got interrupted when I was trying to get some real work done, and disabled it altogether when I started getting junk messages. I definitely grew up with AIM... I think the author's right that older people use email, but I think that's also a function of how much we value our time, not necessarily when we were born. Email has a bit of a grace period for responding. If I can't deal with something right now or want to batch it with other like tasks to manage my own workflow, I want it coming in via email. If I need occasional real time chatter (or need to quickly trade links and tech info with a small team) I'll use IM. To keep connected with my network during the day, I use twitter. There's no way I could keep in touch with everyone that I want to via IM and be productive. When I was younger, I wanted to be constan... The real question is, are our lives truly better for all of this connectivity? Is there virtue lost in succumbing to the ever quickening pace of productivity demands instant 24/7 comms enable? What is the price we are paying for that productivity? Where are we going that we have to get there so fast? Is it all solely in the name of greater consumption that our economies and our environment cannot sustain? |
