I imagine a one-dimensional queue, where all the information that want to reach my consciousness, line up and are being processed one at a time, in a first-in-first-out manner.
If more than one stream of information is arriving at the same time -at the entrance of the queue-, the 'more important' gets in first.
This theory explains why sometimes I realize that my mother is calling me, several minutes after her voice entered my ears, which happens often when I'm focused on a book (an interesting one that is). The information from the book keeps entering the queue, and the voice/sound tries to find a gap and squeeze in. Some sound information (prior to the one I've heard) never even reaches th...

Yes, that's a good point.
Good to know, that there are people working on such things (things like brain-machine interfaces that may help in this matter)...
