Its effect on seed maturation is indicated by the reduced expression of many seed maturation-specific mRNAs (<A class="cite-reflink bibr" href="#ref32">Parcy et al., 1994</A>) and a reduced chlorophyll breakdown at the end of seed maturation in <EM>abi3</EM> null alleles (<A class="cite-reflink bibr" href="#ref26">Nambara et al., 1995</A>; <A class="cite-reflink bibr" href="#ref31">Parcy et al., 1997</A>). This results in the typical green seed phenotype of strong <EM>abi3</EM> alleles (<A class="cite-reflink bibr" href="#ref28">Ooms et al., 1993</A>).
