Brilliant. I've aways been fascinated by Soviet poster art. This looks similar in a lot of ways. I wonder where the aesthetic comes from

You're correct, enbar. Spanish civil war posters are strongly influenced by Russian expressionism and constructivism. These posters were found everywhere and were made for the 'everyday man' Most of these people were workers, peasants, soldiers... who were illiterate. The posters needed to be strong enough to convey messages instantly and simply.

Expressionism and constructivism were effective weapons against the oppressive nature of war. In a time when people lived in repressive conditions, expressionism provided escape from reality and lent an abstract, almost untraceable, voice to those who were forbidden to speak. Constructivism provided societal discourse through art outside privileged and educated circles.
