I would amend that statement to: ofttimes crowds aren't that wise.

Kinda reminds me of that much worshiped and often abused shibboleth usually referred to as, "common sense"

"Common sense" or what all too often passes for this elusive quality is actually the easily manipulated opinions or values of the sheeple/sheep.

What is or should be valued to a higher degree is "rare sense"

I suppose that once upon a time, not all that long ago, the mentality of the lynch mob was thought to be common sense.
