AtlLiberal says: Not surprisingly, the good Christians in Florida are up in arms about those "militant" atheists. Out of curiosity I wonder what the ratio of religious to atheist billboards is? I've always been confused why African Americans embrace Christianity so much when it was forced upon their ancestors, destroying their culture and society, and was often used as a source to maintain their lower caste standings. I've wondered too. Plus the homophobia that seems to be more prevalent. Perhaps future generations will break away from the existing norms. Cultural change is glacial in its movement. When I marched in the 60s for civil rights I believed massive change was just around the corner. Youthful naivete plus over-exuberance was to blame then. Now, at the other end of the age continuum I'm still impatient. Except now I blame it on just being a curmudgeon. I have no clue. Perhaps its an example of how people grasp for the desperate hope in desperate situations. The early black history shows us that many African Americans could have looked upon their lot as quite hopeless and so grasped for that which can't simply be taken from them - an inner fire to believe in something that would yield an end to their mistreatment and torment. Something that could not simply be taken away and in part paralleled the beliefs of the slave owners so would not invoke retribution. I can understand that. It's the same argument believers will make when they say "no atheists in fox holes". While the argument itself, presented as a maxim is completely false, it is rooted in some exa... Slavery was certainly around long before the black/Indian/Mexican slavery of the American states. And so was religion. So in its simplest explanation, (and this is just my reduction), I think that when people got beat, especially if beat bad, in wars and taken as slaves, they likely believed that the god of the victor was stronger than theirs. (What more evidence did one need?) And so theirs either got relegated to non-existence or minor status. And you want to appeal to the greatest god, and that would be the god that beat your god. After all, if your god can't protect you... This is why I've been heavily leaning towards Thor. This is why I've been heavily leaning towards Thor.LOL. Thanks for this on a rainy Monday! |
