I take it you use ubuntu Djiezes - (i've travelled from the Hedgehog to Drake over the last couple of years).

I was previously a slackware8 kind of guy so clearly as I've got older I've got less militant

Well, I do now. I just installed Dapper Drake yesterday & directly upgraded to Edgy Eft.
I'm having some troubles to get things working with this AMD64 version though, like Flash in Firefox, but I'll manage.
