egoldstein says: This whole "i didn't know anything" act of his may not only be pathetic, it may just prove to be b.s. Most likely. Playing dumb and compentent is an easy out. Now being smart: if you had the ability to run various what-if scenerios ahead of time on something like this. You could pretty much predicate such things as collateral damag(they're just a bunch of poor blacks anyway), potential threat (short and long term) and such. You could also determine how much a rebuilding effort and dollars it would take to reconstruct. How many jobs it would create, not just there, but to handle the situation. (validate this with economic growth following the rebuilding after Katrina vs. economic growth prior too). But wait - this is perfect - if help is deployed immediatly after the briefing none of the... Bush 4 days after Katrina: "I don't think anybody could have anticipated a breach of the levees."Director of the National Hurrican Center to Bush prior to Katrina: a breach of the levees "is a very, very, grave concern"Case closed!! Most likely we will here: GWB: "I don't recall having stated that" Reporter: But it is right here on tape and in transcript. GWB: "I don't recall seeing that tape" yadda.....yadda.... Somehow they will work this issue with spin...... Too much money at stake not too. not sure i agree this time...he may just have too many chips stacked against him to weasel out of this one. and the tape doesn't lie. Crap, this just makes me sad... Hindsight is 20/20. I'm sure Bush knows what would happen if there was a slip at the New Madrid Fault. I'm sure he knows what would happen if a tsunami hit the East Coast. Bush didn't build a city 'below sea-level' I don't agree with much Bush does but Katrina is a mess on WAY more levels. Makes you wonder why you allow yourself to create associations and get comfortable with them. How many people name inantimate things and associate 'behavior with them. I don't talk to my car, its name is CHEVY and it doesn't have an agenda for or against me. Intel is like computers: Garbage in / Garbage out This is the most upsetting news report that I have ever seen. The yahoo story is much better than the CNN story on line. I'm not saying that they could have done something to prevent this disaster, but their entire "we couldn't have imagined" story doesn't fly. skwirlinator - I disagree Hindsight is 20/20. Yes - the difference is he was breifed 24 hours prior. They could have activated US National Guard troops from various points in the country and had them there in less then 8 hours to begin moving people to better locations or getting them on buses, etc. Granted the houses would have been wiped out and such, but the people impact would have been reduced. The problem I have is they sat on this information. They also trickled out important information slowl... Reguardless of who knew (if you can actually KNOW exactly how something like nature is going to act before it actually happens) what would happen, where should decisions be made? In other words, who is responsible for enacting emergency measures? The federal government? State goverment? Local government? What if they don't agree? Who overrules whom? Do we want the federal goverment (the president) deciding when you should evacuate or where you should go? Do we want those decisions made by the mayor? The governor? Its all an evil plot by the government to control America's population! Well local gov'ts are certinaly not capable of handling a natural diasaster. The state's only have national guard at their resource. Something the size of Katrina would have been Fed level. The scary thing is that many high up in all gov'ts know more about the bird flu problem then is being said. But consider that there is only a small quantity of Tamiflu (not that it even works well) - but the buying is at the Federal level. Let's say you were a top level and knew that 45 million of your population could be wiped out. If you let too much info out, then you could start a panic (especially since there is no cure). Likewise you simply cannot shut things down because that imapct econom... |
