Socratoad says: Imagine - if you can - not having a conscience, none at all, no feelings of guilt or remorse no matter what you do, no limiting sense of concern of the well-being of strangers, friends, or even family members. Imagine no struggles with shame, not a single one in your whole life, no matter what kind of selfish, lazy, harmful, or immoral action you had taken. And pretend that the concept of responsibility is unknown to you, except as a burden others seem to accept without question, like gullible fools. Now add to this strange fantasy the ability to conceal from other people that your psychological makeup is radically different from theirs. Since everyone simply assumes that conscience is universal among human beings, hiding the fact that you are conscience-free is nearly effortless. You are not held back from any of your desires by guilt or shame, and you are never confronted by others for your cold-bloodedness. The ice water in your veins is so bizarre, so completely outside of th In other words, you are completely free of internal restraints, and your unhampered liberty to do just as you please, with no pangs of conscience, is conveniently invisible to the world. You can do anything at all, and still your strange advantage over the majority of people, who are kept in line by their consciences, will most likely remain undiscovered. How will you live your life? What will you do with your huge and secret advantage, and with the corresponding handicap of other people (conscience)? The answer will depend largely on just what your desires happen to be, because people are not all the same. Even the profoundly unscrupulous are not all the same. Some people - whether they have a conscience or not - favor the ease of inertia, while others are filled with dreams and wild ambitions. Some human beings are brilliant and talented, some are dull-witted, and most, conscience or not, are somewhere in between. There are violent people and non-violent ones, individuals who are motivated by blood lust and those who have no such appetites. I'm happy for the "little voice" inside of me, and always sorry when I didn't listen to it, for whatever reason. I can't imagine not having that as one's guide in life. Imagine getting anything you want; but at a terrible cost to other's. They say ignorance is bliss. I believe not having a conscience would be even more so. But as Deb said. What a terrible thing to not have a conscience. The easiest way to spot a sociopath is that they express ZERO gratitude and suggest others do the same. That is a 100 percent guarantee that one is a sociopath. The second way to spot a sociopath is to discover what action they take for the benefit of others...How much do they give to charity? How much work do they do on behalf of the less fortunate? If they talk the talk, but do NOT walk the walk, then they are certainly a sociopath. A third way to spot a sociopath is by the stock one gives the weight of their own mind over the weight of evidence. This is more uncommon, but occurs among the most sociopathic individuals...See Al Gore, for example. Finally, if you really want to know if ... Imagine the fruits of a partnership of co-operating sociopaths. lol. You can spot many of them driving a Prius because THEY want to contribute to saving the PLANET. The good thing is this...sociopaths are usually IQ-busting smart or IQ-busting stupid, so they tend to make themselves irrelevant to the generally caring masses. Now that's scary, Steve. In regards to the original clip: Assumptions (by the rest of us) are dangerous. People are not all the same. "Imagine the fruits of a partnership of co-operating sociopaths." The partnership between the pharmaceutical corporations and the insurance companies readily springs to mind. The banks and Wall street Defense contractors and arms dealers Politicians and lobbyists. Oil companies and ............. Sociopaths also have an air of superiority and are fraught with suspicion about the motives of others. They also base their points in opposition to others under the refrain, "what does it say about us". Lack of empathy The feelings of other people are of no concern to psychopaths. Psychopaths view people as little more than objects to be used for their own gratification. The weak and the vulnerable—whom they mock, rather than pity—are favorite targets. Psychopaths display a general lack of empathy. They are indifferent to the rights and suffering of family members and strangers alike. If they do maintain ties with their spouses or children it is only because they see their family members as possessions, much like their stereos or automobiles. Because of their inability to appreciate the feelings of others, some psychopaths are capable of behavior that normal people find not only horrific... The feelings of other people are of no concern to psychopaths.Exactly... See my first comment. It's not about perception. It's about reality. |
