I've watched some of those shows on cable TV and I find the format very annoying. They'll have a preview , then a bit of show , then more previews. It gets to the point where ther is actually very little shown it's all hype and commercials.

Tell me one "true-to-life" show that isn't. I am old enough to remember the first "In Search of..." series hosted and narrated by Leonard Nimoy in the mid-70s, it was, is and in my humble opinion, always shall be the bar any other show will have to measure up with.
As for the Clip, I look for the strange and unusual fare, not necessarily buy into it myself.
