While possible, isn't it unlikely? There is a lot of evidence that the sphinx is much older than the pyramids and that the current face it has is probably a renovation that occurred much more recently. So it seems to me that the logic is flawed. They probably utilized an existing structure in the creation of the sphinx. Perhaps the carving was a proposal for a future additional sphinx statue that was never completed? Wouldn't there be something left of it, if it had been created?

Shammaa also says the Sphinx (and its counterpart) is much older than the pyramids; he estimates both statues were present at Giza in early Predynastic Period, many centuries before the Great Pyramid was built. The "face" of sphinx does not have much importance here; probably the original one had a much different look than the one we see now. (The size of its head is considerably small, compared to its body, for example. All evidence indicate a retouch, probably during Khafre's reign.)
