You don't get addicted on the first try (well with the exception of great sex) It is said that there are people who have 'addictive personalities' where they are more prone to addiction because of relative levels of dopamine release.The substance may be whatever addictive substance available at the time. I have been addicted to and given up enough things to know that some I must not touch again, and thinking I can would be suicidal. I have compromised to a point, and stuck to nicotine, and caffeine. It motivates me to do research into things I am eating and taking, and the way it affects my system. Maybe one day I'll give up smoking. (Hope I've got this right) Saw a docu on the receptors in neurons. I asked an appropriate person why I could give up grog overnight and it took me months to be able to walk past a bakery. I've tried everything but cutting my hands off to give up smoking. The "expert" , despite a sounder knowledge of quantum physics, was unable to help. Maybe it is this dopamine, maybe other things as well, genes, stress ? Addiction starts out as a choice.
