Of course it was political. This is the reward of winning elections. Every president, on both sides has appointed all sorts of positions, from cabinet positions to supreme court justices, that reflect the political views of himself and his party. The demagoguery and polarization of this and many other issues by GW's opposition is stunning.

I would dare say that the demagoguery and polarization by GWB is astonishing.
