masbury says: An Iraqi editorial excerpt, as US Congress mulls squeezing funds from Iraq. [A reminder: it was Paul Wolfowitz, I believe, who told us Iraq's oil would pay for the war.] What arrogance from American politicos! Being that: -As of this morning, the US national debt is $9,401,413,582,024.14 -The National Debt has continued to increase an average of $1.62 billion per day since September 28, 2007! -"The United States Congress has appropriated more than $46 billion for the relief and reconstruction of Iraq." -Iraq's oil revenue income on course to hit $70 billion for 2008—twice what was expected. Unless we want to completely collapse the US economy, or we could cut off all other aid to foreign countries until Iraq is rebuilt, or we could cut into even more federal gov't programs, medicaid, medicare, welfare, etc., or perhaps we could pull out of the UN and hence our monetary commitments to... Go after the war profiteers. That is where the money went. cp, you put your finger on it. This system is designed from the bottom up to produce profit by removing $ from average American taxpayers and putting them into the hands of American Big Business, which gets the contracts. It's war for profit. Remember all those "military analysts" who were heavily invested in defense contractors? Perhaps if the money were invested in Iraqi employers, a lasting economy would be built, and young adults wouldn't be available for rabble-rousers to recruit. But then, alas, who'd pressure Congress to keep it up? I am going to be selfish here. Before reconstructing any other countries, lets start at home. Universal health care! Sorry, that was my selfish moment; I will continue to sign all the petitions emailed to me (well- most of them) Dr. Dahlia Wasfi puts US policy into perspective.. Capitalism = Theft. |
