I got to agree with Ollie on this. The focus shouldn't be getting more US troops but getting Iraq ready to govern, sustain and defend itself.

When you look at the US military or any other main armed force, it's a system of many decades of studying, training, learning and constantly becoming better. The Iraqis have the remnants of a former poorly run military led by a really bad military leadership. Saddam and his relatives (aka generals) had little to no training. They sure had money to buy arms but not much else. Their army is at ROTC level at best, and they are in a huge fight.

Most Americans will agree with Ollie and the reality that we don't want to be there any longer than we hav...

I saw the interview and I believe your quotes, while correct, are misleading. He was against the increase of military personal for the purpose of warfare expeditions. He was in favor of an increase if they were used to train the Iraqi military/police, for the purpose of the security of civilian businesses, governmental offices, etc. His issue was with *how* the increase would be used...I noticed only that small portion of the video was played that pit North against the President's plans was played.

I'd expect to have more specifics after the press conference today with Bush's new plan.

My hope would be the plan is based upon stepping up the training and reconstruction efforts. If the insurgents can be taken out of the picture, then less people will be intimidated to get government jobs - heck any job where they are rebuilding the country - and that results in people going to work and making a living, which means securing their future for themselves and their families.

I, too, am hoping that whatever *surge* there will be, will be for the purpose of cleaning out Sadr City and the slums of Baghdad that are being used as launching sites for "civil war"....and while they're there, better patrolling of the Iranian and Syrian borders and better protection of the pipelines.
