These hormones are essential  for human growth and development.  Iodine  deficiency occurs primarily due to deficient intake. Unlike other nutrients  like calcium, iron, vitamin etc. iodine does not occur naturally in foods.  Iodine content of the food depends on the  soil in which it is grown. Foods grown on soil deficient in iodine are also  deficient in iodine. Over the years surface soils have become progressively  depleted in iodine because of rains, flooding, deforestation and soil erosion.  The situation moreover is likely to worsen with time.
