And somehow they get middle-class conservatives bamboozled into carrying the water for them, so they stay just out of sight.

So, explain to me this bit of liberal logic that I seem to be missing. Why would the big, greedy, evil oil companies be paying money to lease land with oil on it but not drilling for the oil? If they are so greedy, why are they throwing their money away by paying to not drill where there is oil?

I am not familiar with the inner workings of the industry, but my guess is that they get massive tax breaks for doing so.
Your suggestion is that they are doing it because they're just nice guys? Sweet and innocent!
They are there because it is profitable, one way or another, to be there. And were their profits not exhorbitant, and were their goods not something essential to our entire society, and were they not at the very nexus of the environment vs profit question, I would say, "Good for them!"

I agree with you. They are there for profit. This is where the argument that they are leasing land that they aren't drilling falls flat on it's face. If there is oil on that land, they are either performing exploration on where to drill, are going through the process of getting all the permits needed to drill, or they are setting up to drill if not drilling as we speak.

Even after they start pumping, until they reach 130,000 barrels of oil per day they aren't considered active. Of course, they don't know if there is oil on a piece of land until they do exploration. And they can't do exploration until they lease the land. I'm sure they have other ways to tell if it is probably, possible, or ...

Sure. I don't think it is a dishonorable business, inherently. I just think they have way too much power in Washington, and have profited excessively not as a result of good business practices alone, but as a result of their DC influence.
Corporations with enormous profits have the money to make their voice much louder on Capitol Hill than that of the rest of us.

And, perhaps as a result, we have a President, a Vice President, and a Secretary of State (and doubtless some others) who've all been industry insiders.
