Laws do not cure mental illness. I don't think this would be as effective as most people would like to believe. It will likely deter pedophiles from living in Texas, but does that really make children any safer? I think this law is just to make everyone else feel safer. taksmaster, as much as I agree that it is a mental illness, at some point you have to take the security and protection of children into account. Some individuals just don't seem to be able to be reformed or do not want to be reformed. In these specific circumstances, though the death penalty is a bit extreme, i feel that you put the rights of the many over the rights of the one. I wouldn't want to have to be the one to pass the sentance down though. I think that though they are obviously very mentally ill, they can still provide some service to society. Maybe they just have to be physically separated from most of society for life... (I also think prisons suck in their current form.. the... Someone tries to mess with my kid, I can guarantee the death penalty will be on my mind. |
