Now, the Republicans will jump to the defense of Sarah Palin and her family, because she is one of their own. However, if they were liberals, these kind of disclosures would be used to crucify them. That sad reality is more than a little depressing. For instance, Obama is repeatedly accused of "not loving America," but unlike Sarah Palin, he never joined a party who's goal was succession.

But the thing that really shocked me is that McCain seems to not be taking this seriously at all. Apparently, according to this article, they are just checking into her background NOW, after they put her on the ticket.

Is this the kind of judgment we want in a President? Honestly, although I am still a McCain fan, this shocked and disappointed me that he didn't have enough wherewithal to have all his ducks in a row.

It seems like he doesn't take running for President that seriously at all, which is too bad for America.

Allow me to stress again:

Aides to Mr. McCain said they had a team on the ground in Alaska NOW to look more thoroughly into Ms. Palin’s background...
(italics, bold, underlining and all caps my own)

The operative word in that sentence is "NOW" meaning, during the Republican Convention, at the same time as she is giving a key speech accepting the role of vice-presidential running mate.

How on earth is that even possible? I mean, I'm really not sure if they meant that as some kind of sick joke.

Agh! Dude, Erics & Derek! The text editor isn't preserving my italics bold and underlining! And honestly, when someone from the GOP says that they are "now looking into" the background of the person they already chose as a vice presidential running mate, it really really really really warrants some bold and italics!

Now I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

What is the shoe? You may ask!

Why, the other shoe that will drop will be the one about the copious amounts of Marijuana consumed during the decision making process at Camp McCain.

How do I know this? Because whoever picked the Alaskan governor with 2 years of major-office experience for the VP slot without checking her background first must have been REALLY FREAKING HIGH!

And I don't just mean stoned, I mean outrageously, spactacularly, world-record breakingly wasted. As in, never before in my sordid life of reckless substance abuse and hedonistic debauchery have I ever been high enough to contemplate doing what they just did.
Not even as...

The other thing that bothers me is that Sarah Palin is being a good person by treating her daughter with love and acceptance despite her practice of premarital sex. This is not, however, the typical position of the Republican Party, or the Christian right. Compassionate conservatives seem to slide all too easily into the role of compassionless morality police.

The question is: is this fair game? Normally, I would say no. In the 21st Century, premarital sex is not immoral, and should not be shocking. What is more, it has absolutely no bearing on whether the partners involved will be good parents.

So why do I hesitate to call this one out of bounds? Because Palin is representing the GOP, and...

And in case you wonder about the depth of Sarah Palin's compassion to people outside her family that don't conform to her conservative world-view on sex?

Well, she vetoed a bill that would deny gay life partners the right to visit each other in the hospital because that sort of discrimination is unconstitutional in Alaska. I applaud that kind of loyalty to a constitution. But then she suggested that they should amend the state constitution to allow for such discrimination so that the next time she wouldn't have to veto it.

That strikes me as vindictive. I mean, to what lengths are you willing to go, simply to ensure that two people who love each other can't hold hands in a hospital room?

Desperation makes you do STUPID things, and after that speech last week by Obama, the Republicans were all sitting around, twisting their hands in a blind panic. Lieberman, McCains choice for BFF wasn't going to cut it. The Hail Mary pass to the endzone might look like it's gonna work, but the referees are now looking at the tape, thinking somebody stepped out of bounds and they are going to have to call the whole play back.
