Not even as a joke! Not even in all my jaded and twisted cynicism. It's just a total mind-f*ck.

To paraphrase Joe Pesci paraphrasing Winston Churchill:

"Who did the vetting? Who picked Palin? F*ck man! It's a mystery! It's a mystery wrapped in a riddle inside an enigma! The f*ckin' candidate doesn't even know! Don't you get it?"

The other thing that bothers me is that Sarah Palin is being a good person by treating her daughter with love and acceptance despite her practice of premarital sex. This is not, however, the typical position of the Republican Party, or the Christian right. Compassionate conservatives seem to slide all too easily into the role of compassionless morality police.

The question is: is this fair game? Normally, I would say no. In the 21st Century, premarital sex is not immoral, and should not be shocking. What is more, it has absolutely no bearing on whether the partners involved will be good parents.

So why do I hesitate to call this one out of bounds? Because Palin is representing the GOP, and...

They have appointed themselves the judges of all things sexual, and have openly placed in their party platform discrimination against people who do not follow their strict rules of sexual conduct. They have sat in judgment of so many, and as a result they have refused to help many of the most needy.

Africans with AIDS? Try abstinence. Pregnant teens? You whore, get off welfare before you drag the economy down! Devoted gay couples who want to get married? Why don't you try being striaght? That failing, why not never have sex for the rest of your life?

So unless Sarah Palin wants to take on the entire GOP establishment on sexual ethics, then I say this is fair game, raising one legitimate question: Why do the Republicans save compassion only for their own children and their scandalized politicians? Why don't they have any for the rest of us?

And in case you wonder about the depth of Sarah Palin's compassion to people outside her family that don't conform to her conservative world-view on sex?

Well, she vetoed a bill that would deny gay life partners the right to visit each other in the hospital because that sort of discrimination is unconstitutional in Alaska. I applaud that kind of loyalty to a constitution. But then she suggested that they should amend the state constitution to allow for such discrimination so that the next time she wouldn't have to veto it.

That strikes me as vindictive. I mean, to what lengths are you willing to go, simply to ensure that two people who love each other can't hold hands in a hospital room?
