merrie says: ABC "V" TV SERIES PILOT PROMO TRAILER http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQoSCEMzJYE Kenneth Johnson, who wrote and directed the 1983 miniseries (it spawned a sequel and then a regular network series over the next two years), took his inspiration from a 1935 Sinclair Lewis novel called It Can’t Happen Here that depicted an imaginary fascist takeover of the United States. The aliens in the original V were patterned after Nazis, and, just in case anyone missed the point, an elderly Jewish character who was a Holocaust survivor periodically hammered on the similarities. But ABC’s series takes aim not at a German dictator from the misty past but a sitting " and popular " U.S. president. From the fawning reaction of the news media (sample press-conference question to V leader Anna: “Is there such a thing as an ugly visitor?”) to the recruiting of human supporters into an alien front group that could easily be mistaken for “community organizing,” the parallels to Obama are unmistakable. The anti-V underground, in its frustrated insistence that the aliens have a covert agenda, resemble nothing so much as the anti-Obama teabaggers. And even the president’s repeated attempts to suborn Republicans into making his program bipartisan get a scorching reference. Elizabeth Mitchell and Logan Huffman in "V," ABC’s remake of an ’80s series about alien encounters and mass delusion. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/03/arts/television/03vee.html Given the political climate today, I can see this series really taking off. I love how even though the aliens are based on the Nazis and fascism, the liberals are complaining that it's a show for conservatives since the aliens are patterend after the Obama administration! Thanks, Steve. You may want to pass this around: 1984, by George Orwell - 7 minute, 37 second Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9JIKngJnCU Great video Steve, I think the animated format made the prediction of a totalitarian, authoritarian regime (which has been unfolding before our eyes) easier to process intellectually, as well as emotionally. I join BigNoseMousie in my curiosity re: myrmidonic ..... from Greek mythology. http://www.pantheon.org/articles/m/myrmidons.html Thank you Steve for your excellent comment. @merrie, Thank you for the time and effort you undertake to present the best clips on clipmarks.
