OSCAR winner KARL MALDEN - who starred in US television show The Streets of 
San Francisco - has died aged 97.

The american actor - born Mladen George Sekulovich - best known for roles in 
Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire and On the Waterfront - died in 
his sleep at about 2.30am (0930 GMT) in his Los Angeles home, according to 
his agent.

years.

plain-spoken gruff men although he was also noted for bringing a natural 
dignity to many of his roles.
