balthazarus says: "New plastics that change from liquid to solid on impact are finding applications in protective clothing and plastic products are being developed using the principles of nature - an area of research called biomimetics. So plastic can be valuable and can be used for functions where it needs to last for a considerable length of time. Concepts of green design should now be applied to all new plastics products so that disposable items, such as plastic packaging and throwaway consumer items, biodegrade and do not fill landfill sites or litter the landscape or seas" Plastic is one of the greatest inventions ever, but recycling it should be required. Need will supply - I read they can make the plastics more environmentally friendly but, like all the safer products, there is a cost. Plastics have a bad name because govts didn't put high enough deposits on them from the start. And plastics come from.... Oil. It ALL leads back to oil. DId you know that over 10% of the oil used in the U.S. everyday is used to make plastics that are NOT even recyclable? Specialty plastics like Lexan and other polycarbonates cannot be recycled, but are still needed. The problem comes from plastics that are meant to be single -use or disposed, (like cups and cutlery) but are not made of recyclable or biodegradable materials to start with. The whole life cycle of a product must be factored in, not just the part where it reaches the consumers hands. It should be easier to recycle plastic or anything else that should be recycled. Blue boxes are fine but it's not the answer because the list of things they won't accept is so much longer than the list of things they do. Plastic is useful but we need to find a way to recycle it or dispose of it without polluting our own environment. http://clipmarks.com/clipmark/689AE8E4-A63C-4BB3-BCB6-DFE6B7B4521C/ |
