blueridge says: It takes ear-marks to get back our gas taxes for interstate and highways work. For some reason the federal government taxes at the pump alot but then alots and apportions money to be spent by ear-marks. This is a good example of a necessary and justifiable ear-mark. Note the republican Congresswoman Capito supported this very big ear-mark too, and West Virginians (and alot of truck lines who move freight through the state, and help pay for the interstates also through tolls) are not complaining. McCain lost all credibility on ear-marks when he supported the Bailout Bill absolutely loaded with them. Perhaps McCain's biggest hypocrisy on Earmarks is the enormous earmark spending (he supports) for Israel, instead of for Americans. Is this the king of all earmarks, Senator Byrd of West Virginia, criticizing McCain? He is well past $3 billion that has been earmarked for West Virginia over the years. I know, I've been to West Virginia, its either up or its either down, I wouldn't like to build a road in West Virginia, but the other 49 states have been doing that ever since Byrd got to the Senate. Here in MO. we'd like a little more money to help us with our roads--it appears there will never be a straight, 2 lane road with wide shoulders from southeast MO to Kansas City, MO as there is from Springfield, MO to St. Louis. The terrain is not as bad as West Virginia, but its very similar from Southeast to Northwest--so I'... Old Byrd is quite a bird dog. His speech on the Senate floor against the Iraq War -- Arrogance of Power -- will remain forever in my mind. (Text of speech: http://www.commondreams.org/views03/0319-04.htm) Video, Part I: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxWfawiufK0 I felt like I was listening to some one in the Senate speaking on the verge of the US Civil War. |
