Silkweaver says: Therapeutic: Cloning for tissue replacement is already happening, as stem cells have successfully grown new heart tissues in patients. Researchers believe replacing muscle, bone, skin; even neurons, teeth, eyes, and other organs could be in beginning stages by 2018. Augmentation: Procedures expected to be in place by as early as 2015 include improved memory recall, simultaneous language translation, long range and microscopic vision on demand, wide spectrum hearing, distinctive voice projection, and stronger muscles. And by mid-to-late-2020s, “nanobots” monitoring each of our cells could keep us ageless and forever healthy. Designed Evolution: These could include memory, intelligence, speed, agility, and other behavioral and physical attributes. Eliminating undesired genes that might pre-dispose a child to cancer, heart disease or alcoholism could be possible by about 2015. Will the 'new you' that looks in the mirror have increased its self-glorification and pleasure by eliminating that troubling niggle of conscience about the dreadful condition of its recent ancestors who suffer so much on the planet? Or will those primitive creatures by then have been annihilated completely or allowed to die out completely in the name of the glorious brave new future? The number of unwarranted assumptions per line is so high here, I cannot begin to think how to respond to this. I'll try anyway... Technological breakthroughs do not come to replace some very basic upgrades in ethical values and moral behavior humanity should undertake. There is no point to assume that being more technologically advanced people will become more 'evil' and less caring for their fellow humans. Rapid advancements, however, may bring about great cost reductions in many areas, which generally means that more technology will reach more people faster. See for example cellular communication. Is an 'advancement' an advance on an advance, part of the specialised language of a 'designed evolution' that will lead to the leimination of death so exponential growth of a population that is so large already that 'we' cannot muster the wit to distribute the most primitive necessities such as food and basic medicine? Or will the 'upgrades in ethical values' take care of this? Will these 'upgrades' be epiphenomenological emergent enhancements of the newly designed humanity, and automatic by-product of this exciting intelligent design? What is the status of representational contribution to the design of the 'ethical upgrades', if they are to be separate designs, from the presnt sunstandard e... abailart: These are all very serious riddles, I am not sure that here is the fittest medium to have such an exchange about them, but I will try. 'Life extension' will not become 'immortality' in one day, and certainly it does not cover all causes of death. It is a process that will take a few decades or more. Even when it will be available, not all humans will choose to extend their lives. The process of accommodation, I believe, will be gradual irrespective to availability, so exponential population explosion is not an immediate threat, as some claim to be the case. Moreover, we do not know if human beings with very long life span will choose to bring to the world as many children as we d... Cont': When I said 'ethical upgrade', I did not assert that it is only a question of science and technology. Neuroscience, evolutionary psychology and general behavioral science can help a lot, but there is certainly something extra needed. Perhaps it is the realization that as a civilization we must evolve or perish. I do not mean 'evolve' in the biological sense, not even in the technological sense, but something much deeper having to do with the fundamentals of our worldview and our understanding of our identity as intelligent beings. Whether such transformation will take place, I do not know, I try to stay optimistic even in the light of many facts to the contrary. I do believe in the p... Thanks. Silkweaver, for reply. I agree with all you say. Implied questions, assumptions, riddles etc. are rhetorical. There is an ideological aspect to neuroscience, AI, singularity etc. which, as you understand, this is not the place to discuss. I am very interested and excited by developments, though am no scientist myself. I am more active in the political and philosophical contexts in which I have to place these, being stuck with Version 1. More or less! |
