masbury says: Conservative activist Paul Weyrich in 1980 lays out long-term strategy to suppress voting, insisting "our leverage in the elections...goes up as the voting populace goes down. There's the defining principle of the Republican party; it flavours everything they do — seize capital they don't actually have. They don't have the mandate to rule, they don't have the heart of the nation, they don't have the money to pay for the lifestyle they want; and they use whatever means available to seize it; including amoral and illegal ones. If McCain wins this election, it will only be because of the votes they steal using the Republican-created, unverifiable electronic voting machines. All things considered there,s nothing to fear from compulsory voting too! Don't underestimate the intelligence of the general public. In Australia it has delivered Right-wing @ Left-wing Governments ousting which ever screws up along with minority parties that try to" keep the bastards honest".Why fear democracy? If you didn't vote you merely send reply to electoral office (if they find you) that you had gone fishing or something lame, that's the end of it, but it encourages everyone to get off their arse, truly a more representative Government!! QUOTE FROM CLIP "recent fear-mongering claims of “voter fraud” are part of a long-running right-wing campaign to suppress the vote." END QUOTE I believe this to be absolutely true. Absolutely. It's good there has been a big pushback against the false ACORN claims which has helped define and bring these voter suppression plans and tactics to light. The more people vote, the more real democracy is. Trying to restrict or suppress voting is anti-democratic. Compulsory voting like in Australia is one idea that would help turn out the vote. Some nations give out $20.00 rebates if you vote. One thing for sure, it's wrong to make it harder to vote. --- The rather new policy of allowing early v... Right. And I can't imagine that most Republicans are opposed to large turnouts. It's just another one of these sneaky things from R leaders to look like you're doing something good (in this case, supposedly preventing fraud) when you're really just trying to stack the deck. It's like McCain saying, "America needs to know about Bill Ayers." So, OK, tell us. He doesn't want to tell us, he just wants to keep raising questions. Neither do I if they're in any way paid by the govt. You know, that "conflict of interest" thing. In Aust the $20 is possible fine for not voting from any electorate and you can cast absentee vote by mail in advance if you are at sea or in bush in shearing shed or isolated mining camp. Standing in lines using suspect machines like what happened in Florida last time hasnt got it. I guess USA has lots more illegals in country and those on electoral role compared to real population might get insufficient funds for schools ,hospitals ect in places like California. You get the Government you deserve if you don't vote.!! What happens in USA affects us to. The banking , the military alliance and hardware ,same media ,shared intelligence, multicultural society, rule by law,(same injus... Wasn't it Stalin who said, "It's not who votes that counts, it's who counts the votes."? Clipped a source. Latest voter suppression scam I heard (and sort of dangerous become maybe most believable) Students in swing states where they could make a difference are being told that if they vote in the state where they go to school, then their parents will not be able to use them for the standard tax deductions you get for kids. Also told that if they have overdue parking tickets they will be arrested at the polls. Yes, the first one I read about and am sure it's legit. The 2nd one is new to me. The first may have happened in Iowa - can't remember just now - but the state thought it important enough to address it publicly, as I recall. |
