masbury says: Yes! This could be a turning point in the history of technology. Corporate America wants dearly to impede the internet. which remains faster in Japan, Korea, France, etc... We have major speed problems here. Why are our govts so anti infrastructure? Goes back to the govts being there to support business/industry, not people. Access to and freedom of information is the lifeblood of a healthy democracy. This move and perspective expressed is as critical to the future of the citizenery in the face of the relentless advance of corporatism as any Obama could make. It plants the seeds of even greater change to come if the will of the people is strong enough to act to effect that change. Truly! Corporate America wants to own the internet, and thus to be able to filter what's on it. At first this would be for competitive reasons (they could pick whose products' reviews - or whose writers' reviews - got wide distribution, for instance). But it wouldn't be long until they saw a need to influence information we get about government, to help further their corporate agenda. Ask yourself how much news we get about Palestinian starvation, for instance, compared to that revealed in other nations. The broadcast media are owned, in every sense. Where would we be if the web were that way? It's less an ideological battle than people think masbury. By limiting the size of the pipe they can demand more money for more usage.. A truly fiber optic pipe would make the argument for these addition fees seem less compelling. |
