In his speech, Mr Darling said that debt would hit a record £175bn this year and that the economy would <A href="http://www.freelancesupermarket.com/news/2008/01_2009/contractors-optimistic-despite-economic-gloom.aspx">shrink 3.5%</A>  - its worst performance since 1945. Tory leader David Cameron described the budget as a “missed opportunity”. Going further he said that the government was "running out of money, moral authority and time".
