After the fall of the Kings around 500 BC, the Republic as it was known was one of the most civilised societies in the ancient world - a Republic was ruled elected executives whose power was checked by a constitution so well crafted that it inspired the founding fathers of the United States of America. I soon realised that the civil war which ended this society and paved the way to the Age of the Roman Emperors was a very engrossing and complex period indeed.
