As liberal/ left-wing as I am, yada, yada, yada, I can't help but think that Tony and Steve here make a few good points.

Am I the only person who read this, whilst rushing my
lunch at my desk, who thought 'why am I and other hard-working tax
payers funding these people' ?? I work 11 hours a day and last year
paid 40k a year in tax. Why should I have to pay for these mums to
'have fun' and stay at home simply because there 'was nothing else'
that they wanted to do with their lives?
I had Better get back to work, or they won't be able to afford to have
the next baby...

If welfare help for singles mums dried up - so
would the problem. In Holland they set ...

I'd have to agree with you. The welfare system in America is just as broken.

I wonder what happens next. Neither country can sustain its welfare system for much longer.

People will have to start supporting their extended family, like they did before the welfare system. Of course back then, it was shameful to be an unwed mother. And shameful not to take care of your family. Now, not much is shameful anymore. And no one is responsible for anything anymore.

Exactly. So why would families bother, really?

I like the hostel idea. hee hee. My little sister is a teenage mom on welfare, but it's running out. She has four children and will be 22 in April. The father of the first two is her main source of "welfare" when the government won't pay, but he's irresponsible at best.
I am family and help all I can, but I have two of my own along with a non-working boyfriend currently. A reeducation hostel would have been awesome on her first pregnancy when she was 14.
