dulios says:
"Her book contends that “silent racism” fosters routine actions not recognized by an individual as racist, but upholds the status quo. Trepagnier says that some whites become detached from the race issue while others are so concerned with it that they become apprehensive about it, avoiding even the mention of the topic. In both cases, this passive stance silently provides the racist actions of others an endorsement, or worse, encouragement.
Trepagnier claims that even individuals who feel enlightened in race relations often miss the point. In one of her studies, 25 white women who considered themselves progressive voiced their opinions to Trepagnier in eight group sessions from Santa Barbara, California.

In the discussions, the women who were most race-aware said that they could identify racist actions they had performed as recently as a week ago. Among the least race-aware was a woman who responded, “Racism has nothing to do with me."

"“That makes no sense because as whites, we all benefit from the way race plays out in our lives. I found out that I was racist on some level,” Trepagnier said. “I admitted to things I’ve said that were racist, which helped participants also open up. Recognizing how I perpetuate the problem, too, was a factor in my deciding to do the study.”

Explicit racism is fairly easy to spot. The unconscious racism is something else. If someone asserts loudly that they are not racist, I believe they do not understand ideology, the nature of racism, or themselves.

Would anyone care or dare to suggest that Whites are privileged because they earned that privilege fair and square in the free marketplace of reality?

And she wants to continue that old lie that Blacks can't be racist because they don't have power. Now isn't that the way to solve problems; endorse double standards?

Of course she has it backwards.Whites can't be racist because they do have power.

And how did that happen? If you ignore 220 years of history, then yeah...sure.

That makes no sense. Unless it was a joke, which I admit I didn't find funny. But then again....

What you mean a measly 220 years. Us Whites weren't born yesterday you know. And you want to cry unfair?
When did reality become unfair?

The point being on that matter resolving to the fact that Whites are the winners but that does not prove the untestable but apparently common racist notion that if another race were the winners, they would be a kinder and more gentle power wielders and it is not a theory I would care to test out!

That makes no sense. Unless it was a joke, which I admit I didn't find funny. But then again....
Ah but that is the point. If it makes no sense to say Wh...

Fair and square?
I grew up in a nice town in northern Indiana. Went to a great school with successful sports teams. I had the opportunity to study three of the five languages offered at the school. Got to go on field trips to Chicago - saw Shakespeare performed by Second City, saw La Traviatta at the opera, visited the Museum of Science and Industry, Brookfield Zoo, the Art Institute.
There were almost 2000 students in my high school, and we were all white. I thought about it a little, but just chalked it up to the fact ...

Did I "earn" the great education I got? Hell no. I grew up in a town that purposely excluded blacks from getting the same education and living in the same neighborhood.
Your whole argument is based upon one assumption.
That if another race was in charge they would be nice unlike us Whites!

Surely you don't think I'm trying to say that everyone gets equal or fair treatment?

It's not even proven that equal and fair treatment is or will ever be possible.

It's my firm belief that even if there was only one race on the the planet, people would still divide up into groups and the same exact problems that we call racism would be happening!

First off, that my hometown was a sundown town is not an assumption, it is a fact. To this day, the town is 95% white.

Second, the author of this book is asking us as white people to recognize our own, if silent, racism. She is making no argument as to hypotheticals (if "another race was in charge").

@dulios
Why are you ignoring my points?

Do you think you can guilt trip Whites into thinking in the PC way you have decided is the RIGHT way?

I'm not saying that fairness as much as possible shouldn't occur. I'm saying that if people try to guilt trip me into thinking some PC way I'm just going to push back.
That's me.
I know a lot of Whites spend more time worrying about how others might think about them than about being honest. That's sad That's their problem, not mine.

If I were gay, I wouldn't be demanding that everyone love me or feel sorry for me.
I would only wish to be able be physically safe to live my life.
I wouldn't care if people thought my choice was wrong As long as I can l...

The notion that our western 'civilization' is superior than Asian, Arab,Black is racism. Our western media is good at constantly comparing these backward civilizations against the West but on western terms to show how they don't measure up, as we see it.

So when the Blacks started rattling their cages in their ghettos, what was the CIA solution? Pump 'em full of drugs. And who is bring the drugs in from Columbia and Afghanistan today? That's silent racism to main...

Racism is a human condition not a western civilization or American condition. The suggestion that one group cannot be racist is a racist suggestion.
A previous commenter wrote about unconscious racism. What is that? If it is unconscious, how is it racism? Racism is prejudice. How is that unconscious? Racism also suggests that I, if I were racist, would suggest my race superior to yours. How is that unconscious? You are on some Minority Report kick when you suggest these things. It gives me chills.
