Words of wisdom from Roseanne Barr, eh? Great source material there... Women are born with power, albeit power that some feminists find distasteful (or beyond reach for those, like Roseanne Barr, who lack traditional feminine charms, both physical and emotional). I sense that, ironically, many feminists actually conform to a definition of power that was created by men. In their rush to adopt a masculine definition of power they eschew, and denigrate, the traditional power that women have held since at least the dawn of civilization. Women should be free to pursue traditional masculine power, but they should also cherish their own, more subtle, feminine power. The idea of 'traditional', 'subtle' and 'feminine' power is again very stereotypical. It just conforms to the whole idea of women being 'nurturers' and it's about time that changed. I don't understand what is 'masculine power'. Political dominance? Physical might? What exactly is masculine and feminine power? "It just conforms to the whole idea of women being 'nurturers' and it's about time that changed" Why? The nurturing instinct is an important part of a package of instincts/traits that created civilization. I agree with Durant: primitive man, left to his own devices, would have been satisfied with a nomadic existence. The instincts of females have civilized the world. I suppose that I'm not too worried that radical feminists will triumph in their attempts to de-feminize:. such instincts are immutable. The branches can be shaken occasionally, but the roots will remain. Ultimately, women will always want to be feminine. I have no problem with women being nurturers but that role should not be imposed on them. And in most cases it is, because that serves to extend patriarchal structures in societies. How do you explain the statistically proven fact that women own just 1% of the world's property? How do you explain that women are still not educated, discriminated at workplace and abused if they are assertive, or about the fact that they are not enough female political representatives in almost every country in the world? I come from a developing country and because of this concept that women should stay at home and nurture, we have been kept away from politics, workplace and been relegated to the status of s... I'm a Westerner, and presumed that you were too. I understand your perspective. You're right, of course, women should have the right to choose for themselves how they live their lives. Merry Christmas That's okay. Always good to have a discussion. Merry Christmas to you too! If a woman chooses to have children, I believe she has "chosen" to be a nurturer. Please, don't have them if that is NOT what you want to be. There are billions of children out there who have no one who put the interests of their young and helpless before their own. If you want to have "power" (the *world's definition), have an inferiority complex and consider nurturing and dedicating your life to teaching/training children as being a 'second-class' citizen, then, please don't have babies. The job is waaaay too serious and important. Merry Christmas to you both!!! You completely missed the point of my comment, but anyways, hope you had a good Christmas! |
